Remove Smoke Smell From Furniture

How to Remove Smoke Smell from Furniture

Smoke, whether from cigarettes or other burning things, can leave an unpleasant odor in your home. What’s worse is that this smell can stick to your furniture, leaving your house smelling rotten. Fortunately, there are many ways to get smoke smell out of furniture. Listed below are a few tips to help.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can absorb unpleasant odors and leave a new beautiful scent behind (if you get the scented kind that is). Try sprinkling some of it on your furniture and see what happens. Let it settle for around a day, and then vacuum it up. You may want to test on a hidden part the furniture first to make sure the baking soda will not cause damage. Wait for five minutes and if nothing happens proceed with the rest of the furniture. This method is pretty time-consuming since you will need to do the procedure more than one time.

Coffee GroundsFresh Coffee Grounds

Just like baking soda, coffee grounds can absorb unpleasant odors. First, put coffee grounds into a few coffee filters and tie them closed. Spread the filters over different parts of the furniture making sure to hit each part. Let them sit for about a day and then clean up.

Vinegar

The leftover tar and resin from cigarettes is what leaves the disgusting smell of smoke behind. Vinegar can cut through tar and resin easily because of its acidity. It is a very effective tool to remove the smell of smoke. Simply pour some of it on a cloth and place it near or on the furniture. Leaving it in one place for a couple of hours will remove the smell of smoke from your furniture. A downside to this method is that vinegar has an unpleasant smell of its own. However, unlike the smell of smoke, the smell of vinegar can diminish in time.

Crushed Charcoal

Crush some charcoal and put it in different bowls. Put the bowls around the furniture and leave it there overnight. Dispose of the charcoal in the morning when the odor is eliminated.

OnionOnion

Like baking soda and coffee grounds, onions are also good at absorbing odor. Simply cut a few onions into pieces and place them in a plastic wrap. Leave the plastic on the foul-smelling furniture for a few hours. When the smell is gone, discard the onion and plastic and give the furniture a few squirts of Febreze fabric citrus air freshener.

Vodka

Like lemon juice, simply spray or wipe some vodka onto the affected area and let it work its magic.

Enzyme Spray

Enzyme sprays can be bought in most pet stores and large supermarkets. Spray on the affected area and then wipe flat areas using a paper towel. This will ensure that the formula is spread out. When using commercial sprays, however, make sure that they have cleaning agents as ingredients. Some deodorizers that are purely scent generating only mask the cigarette’s smell instead of removing it.

lemon juiceLemon Juice/Citrus Product Spray

Lemon juice mixed with water in a 1:4 solution is probably the most effective way of getting rid of cigarette odor. Simply rub or spray on some of the mixture on the affected areas and let the citric acid in the lemon juice work its magic. Citric cleaning products can be substitutes for lemon juice in cases where the latter is not available. To ensure that no damage will be done on your furniture, read the label on the bottle and test it on an inconspicuous area first.

Sunlight

Sunlight is probably the cheapest way to remove cigarette smell from your furniture. The only downside of this is that it is a hassle to keep bringing your furniture outside. If you do manage to get it outside, let it sit for around 8 hours before bringing it back inside.

There are many other ways to remove smoke smell from furniture. Listed above are just a few of the most common methods. Each and every method mentioned above is safe and effective. Which of these you decide to use is entirely up to you.
